What is PTSD?
Post Traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is mental health condition that can develop after you experience or witness a traumatic event. This event might be something you found emotionally and physically harmful or life-threateningly. PTSD can impact your mental, physical, social and even spiritual well-being. Examples of traumatic events include natural disasters, serious accidents, acts of terrorism, combat, rape or sexual assault, historical trauma, intimate partner violence, and bullying.
Types of PTSD
PTSD can manifest in various ways, depending on the nature of the traumatic event and individual differences. While the core symptoms remain consistent, how they affect you can differ. Common types include:
Acute PTSD
Symptoms appear within three months of the traumatic event and last less than three months.
Chronic PTSD
Symptoms last for three months or longer and can be ongoing.
Complex PTSD
Results from prolonged or repeated exposure to trauma, such as ongoing abuse or captivity, leading to more severe symptoms and difficulties in relationships and self-perception.
Symptoms
PTSD symptoms are grouped into four main categories. The severity of these symptoms can vary from person to person.
Intrusion
You might experience repeated, involuntary memories of the traumatic event. This can include distressing dreams or flashbacks, where it feels like you are reliving the trauma or seeing it vividly before your eyes.
Avoidance
You might try to avoid reminders of the traumatic event. This could mean steering clear of people, places, activities, or objects that trigger distressing memories. You might also avoid thinking about or talking about what happened
Alterations in Cognition and Mood
You may have difficulty remembering important parts of the traumatic event. Your thoughts and feelings might become negative, leading to distorted beliefs about yourself or others, such as thinking, “I am bad” or “No one can be trusted.” You might also experience ongoing fear, anger, guilt, or shame, lose interest in activities you once enjoyed, feel detached from others, or struggle to feel positive emotions.
Alterations in Arousal and Reactivity
You might become easily irritable and have angry outbursts. Your behavior may become reckless or self-destructive. You might be overly alert, easily startled, or have trouble concentrating and sleeping
